For you covid data folks
South Carolina Department of Health (DHEC) has a great stats filled website on covid in the state. It’s very interesting. South Carolina has been ahead of many other states in reopening, but slightly behind Florida and Texas. Many of the SC reopening efforts took place in early May. Within the last 10 days hair salons, gyms, massage parlors reopened.
The covid case count shows continued declines through May as things reopened. Interesting is the graph of cases shows the basic 12 week cycle from case 1 to flat or minimal cases. This same cycle is illustrated in the vast majority of other countries regardless of containment efforts including Wuhan province where it originated. 6 weeks to peak. 6 weeks to minimal new cases.
South Carolina has had 446 confirmed covid deaths. Average age is 74.9. Median is 76 years.
Suicides average about 800 per year in the state. Drug overdoses were just about 1,100 for the last year available. Accidents kill about 3,000 per year in the state.
I think testing is interesting as well. Overall 188k tests have been administered within the state. 16k positive cases. That’s a lot of negative cases. I guess a lot of folks had symptoms of other things.
Overall the state data, along with that in Florida and SC shows good news for reopening in my opinion.
I was on the coast of NC for most of the past 10 days. Full of folks from NY and NJ who told me they had to get out to somewhere that was more opened. Cell phone data shows 15% of NYC population has left the city. Wonder how many of them will go back.
