We were in the longest economic recovery on record

A recession of some sort was coming and bound to happen. We might not have lost as many businesses as we are more than likely going to but the bottom line is there are some unhealthy companies out there financially.
My last company is very conservative financially and knew some sort of downturn was coming. For the last couple of years they have been solidifying their cash position, lowering EBITDA, and decreasing their leverage all while getting panned as too conservative by analysts who thought they should be borrowing more. Now they are being praised by those same analysts for being ready to deal with this. And they will have massive buying opportunities (at a discount) from the grasshopper that were blissfully wasting their time while the ants worked toward a known goal.
