and I think it was in particular to N95 masks. So if someone asked an expert a question like will an N95 mask protect me? The expert would prevaricate on answering the question directly, he or she did not want to provide a media soundbite that N95 masks protected you best of all, instead they suggested those needed to be saved for the medical community. I suspect that lead to a lot of confusion on masks in general, eg, other types of masks don't protect "you" (but protect everyone else) is a harder concept to get across to the public so all people heard - were messaged - was that masks don't protect you. So the science hasn't changed just messaging the public has changed.
