My guess is that since it was impossible to get masks early in the


situation, they either focused on the aspect of the mask that was bad, or outright went for propaganda to prevent hoarding and keep supply available for the health pros.

Now, well, masks aren't plentiful per se, but many have proved capable of making decent coverings at home, they looked at it more, etc. and decided that the benefits (keeps YOU from exhaling virus when you're out) outweighed the risks (you touch your face more often).
