Mike wrestled for Norview High School. In the finals of the VSHL state tournament in 1957 he pinned Gray Simons of Granby.

Mike won two Southern Conference championships: in '61 at 123 and in '62 at 130. He also won the Chattanooga tournament in '61 at 123.
