I don't share your opinion in some important ways....Buzz was plenty good

enough of a talent evaluator, recruiter, roster manager and coach to take VT basketball from the armpit of the ACC to the sweet 16 in 5 years. EVERYTHING Buzz did was to accomplish two goals ; 1) win at VT - NOW - and 2) leverage that success to get his next gig in Texas (or somewhere close to home)

His roster management was plenty good to get us to the Sweet 16 with 8-9 guards on the team, one decent "big" etc. His roster management basically stopped when he knew (about 2 years before he left) he was going to leave for A&M or elsewhere because he never intended to stay at VT once he had created the leverage to get that next best job for Buzz. Buzz could do and did do everything he NEEDED to do to meet his 2 goals above, and nothing more, because he didn't have a 3rd goal of staying at VT long term and repeating or "sustaining" what he did in the 5 years to mean there would be a 6th year or more. Buzz is a so authentic in who he is that he's also very predictable. He's going to make A&M a winner just like he did at Marquette and VT. When he decides he's done enough there to hang it up and either move on the next "best job" , or hang up coaching all together, he'll do what he does best....look out for #1. Like him or hate him Buzz has the best record in the shortest period in time in VT basketball history..in the toughest league every year in college basketball. And I don't think Buzz EVER intended to stay at VT long enough to build a sustainable program.. In Buzz's mind "sustainable" means...do only what I have to do today to get me on to the next "thing" and VT was never going to be his "thing" for long.
