I think it's actually pretty common
With so much flux in players these days, plus the incoming freshman are mostly going to bolt if they can. Coaching changes lead to a lot of player turnover, especially if you have a really good year with seniors and underclassmen leaving for NBA or graduating.
NC State had a similar year when Gottfried was fired, for example. And our cupboard wasn't super full during our last coaching change. Although part of that was Buzz's choosing/doing.
The flip side is you can rebuild a roster pretty quickly.
