The closest VT got to joining the SEC was probably in the late 90s

When I was a student at VT during the late 90s, the CT ran a story indicating that the SEC were having "discussions" with Miami, VT, WVU, and an unnamed school about forming a 16 member conference. I found out later that all indications pointed towards Miami probably killed the deal. I think VT was okay with how things played out because VT was able to use it to parlay full membership in the Big East.
