Redshirting isnt easy in basketball...
When an injury happens, you dont have built in contingencies like football with 85 scholarships. You have 13 scholarships and all 13 are needed. Ideally youd like a 9-man rotation and the other 4 are versatile and spread out among positions (PG, Wing, 4, 5)
If someone goes down, one of those 4 players hops into the rotation.
What if Bede gets hurt in January...out for the year. Do you burn Cone's redshirt? He will be coming into conference play without playing a single minute all year. Youre really screwing yourself.
It is even harder to redshirt a kid who has already played a full season. Basketball kids dont sit out a full year willingly like football. The only cases where coaches get away with redshirts are transfers, injuries, and occasionally redshirting a post player who has a lot of developing to do. FSU does that a lot.
Best way to push Cone out the door is to pitch a redshirt year.
FWIW, theyll all get a redshirt this season anyway
