Bama didn't pay Saban $7M when he was first hired there.

So his pay IS proportionate to the program's success.

Second, I do not in any way think VT fans are pissing their money away donating to the football program. They are choosing to support an organization they care about and that they want to see thrive.

I also give money to the American Cancer Association. Just because they haven't cured cancer doesn't mean I'm pissing my money away.

If your donations are based upon achieving some ultimate success, like winning a national championship, I think you're giving for the wrong reason. Give because you love VT and want to support the football program -- not because your dollars will produce a certain number of wins or championships. JMO.

Or don't give. That's completely up to you. If you think VT fans are pissing their money away, you are, of course, free not to do the pissing.

I don't have some nostalgic view of college football as an amateur sport. I also don't think 120 schools with vastly different characteristics are the same as 30-32 professional teams.

There are 100 FBS programs that will NEVER win a national championship. VT is probably one of them. It is what it is. I don't think capping budgets is the solution. People are freely choosing to give their money to Alabama in ways they aren't to the Toledo. Good for Alabama. Those people down there need SOMETHING to feel good about -- there isn't much else happening in their state.

There is not equalizing that can be done. There are always unintended consequences with greater intervention (we see that with all the silly NCAA restrictions as it is). Doing more on that front would be a disaster, IMO.
