Coaching salaries are ridiculous, especially when justified as marketing

Public universities don't need a marketing arm beyond their alumni, professors, and research. They weren't created to make money they were created to educate their state populations. Big time college football is not a collegiate game, it's a professional sport in every single way except the players get screwed by not getting paid so the school can use more money on fringe benefits.

Most people are OK if all the sports stuff is funded by boosters and not coming out of the university ledger. That's more understandable as it's not directly tied to government funding, but it still is a private entity using a public institution as a way to generate personal gains. Whether those be in rights & privileges, tax benefits, goodwill, marketing, etc Phil Knight and Nike are absolutely benefiting from bankrolling Oregon beyond typically apparel contracts.

I'm fully in favor of capping how much money schools can pour into sports, not that it will every happen because the NCAA is a big business masquerading as a governing body. They're basically what the SEC would be if the SEC had a trading arm competing with the banks.
