7-8 innings is not a realistic expectation for college pitchers.
That is way too many pitches for an arm.
Consider:
In 2019, UNC defeated Georgia Tech for the ACC championship.
The three UNC pitchers with the most starts in 2019 averaged 5.47 innings, 5.25 and 5.125, respectively.
The Georgia Tech three top GT starters averaged 7.06 innings, 5.18 innings, 3.83 innings per appearance.
Quick comparison of innings/per start in 2019 by some top MLB pitchers accustomed to a higher workload: Strasburg, 6.33; Scherzer, 6.37; Corbin 6.12; Verlander, 6.55; Cole, 6.42. The average in MLB undoubtedly was much lower.
