A couple of thoughts
Aly Rayle is a very good pitcher - especially considering she's only a sophomore. I thought she totally confused us on Friday - at least the first time through the order. She had 6 Ks in the first 3 innings before we figured her out.
Today, we hit the ball hard, but it just didn't fall in. In the second inning, Bailey blasted a line drive right at the third baseman and Slaw followed with one almost over the left fielder's head, and then the next inning Lattin hit one that's out of the park if the wind isn't blowing in so hard from right. So I really felt it was just a matter of time.
I think UVA will struggle when Rayle doesn't pitch. Grube, who is just a Freshman, has lost her last five starts and is 1-7 on the year. I thought going in that we might run-rule her yesterday, but she shut us down the first three innings.
Both UVA pitchers are hurt by the Wahoo defense. They made 6 errors against JMU on Tuesday and 5 in the final two games against VT. They are not a great hitting team so their margin for error (literally) is small.
The positive for VT is the balance up and down the order - not to mention what we have coming off the bench. We are a hard team to shut down. It can certainly be done, but there are no easy outs.
Sorry for the long answer, but that's my view from the cheap seats.
Let's Go Hokies!!!
