Your scenario may not work for VT and maybe NC State

because the ACC has sacrificed 2 of VT's historic rivalries (Miami and WVU) and 1 of NC State's historic rivalry (Clemson aka the "Textile Bowl"). Now of course people could say that VT and NC State could continue playing those teams as OOC games in years they aren't conference games. As a UVA fan, would you want to see UVA play UNC, VT, and maybe Duke as OOC games in years UVA doesn't play them as conference foes? What happens when it is UVA's turn to play Notre Dame as an OOC game? Hence why I threw Duke into the equation given that some UVA fans consider Duke to be a "rival" and the possibility that the ACC could switch to a 9-game conference schedule.

WRT Wake, I am not sure how Wake would feel about your scenario. From Wake's perspective, I would think they would want to at least continue playing both Duke and NC State annually as conference games. Playing UNC annually would be a desire, but one that could be sacrificed given how the current divisions are aligned. If the ACC were to go the 3 division 15 team route, then I could see UVA placed in the same group with the 4 NC schools. As a result, the other 2 groups could look something like this:

North: BC, Syracuse, Pitt, VT, WVU
South: L'ville, Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami

It is possible the majority of schools may not want to see the 4 southern schools in the same group for recruiting reasons. If that is the case, then the ACC might opt to go with a zipper model to creating the 3 groups. It could also mean that each team has 1 protected game with 1 team from the 2 remaining groups (2 protected games total) and 1 rotating conference game among the 4 remaining teams in each of the remaining groups (2 rotating games total).
