Their were many disparate calls yesterday. Most of the
disparity was among the refs. Ponytail is just plain bad. Often wrong, never in doubt.
They let them play yesterday. In the first few minutes of a game, both teams are trying to divine how the game is going to be called--tight or loose. It's when the officiating crew changes that dynamic mid-game, that the refs look bad. To put the best spin on yesterday, the crew was generally consistent--they let them play the whole game.
So, what I watch for is consistency of calls. The second thing I look for is what I call "rotational mechanics" of the refs. A ref on the baseline should not be calling fouls out front, and a ref out front should not be calling fouls on the baseline. Ponytail violated the "rotational mechanics" and was making calls that weren't hers to make. She wanted to dominate the game. Teddy Valentine does this, and Karl Hess used to do it before he was banned from the ACC. Jerry Heater does it all the time. That's why he calls more fouls than anyone else in the country. He's always 1st or 2nd in called fouls. [Post edited by saret at 02/03/2020 10:55AM]
