Comparing football and basketball is a bit of a fool's errand.

-Basketball can play multiple games in a week. And can stay at the same site and play multiple games.
-There are many more D1 basketball teams than football teams.
-It is easier for there to be big upsets in basketball than football--it is also a big part of the allure and history of the basketball tournament.
-With the violence of football, I think there is a move for less games, not more.
-And the timing a big football tournament in between semesters is a challenge to work around.

Also think about this. Since the NCAABBT went to 64 teams, an 8-seed (Villanova), and a 7-seed (UConn) have won the tournament, IIRC. If football would have a 32-team tournament, this would be the equivalent of #29-32 willing it all in football. Doubt that would ever happen. The gap between 1 and 32 in much larger in football than in basketball.
