I don't think that's it. Do you have Facebook at all? People say some

truly baffling things and then they get their own echo chamber to back them up.

It used to be that you only had your circle of friends to talk with and they would stand up to you or at least debate you civilly if they didn't agree. Nowadays, civility goes out the door because you have your own hype team backing up every word you say and if someone disagrees with you, like 40 people jump in to tell you why you are wrong.
