Yes, scoring is *very* top-heavy at the NCAAs.


Last year, Mekhi Lewis got 44% of our team total (22/50) as a national champion, which was significantly more than McFadden (5th - 11 points) and Zavatsky (8th - 5.5 points) combined. The other six qualifiers combined got 11.5 points. To contend for the podium (top 4), you really need like 6 all-Americans or multiple champions.

Tournament scoring for the ACCs is actually fairly similar to the NCAAs, but with smaller total scores. But since everyone finishes in the top 6 by definition, the difference between 1st and "also in the field" (i.e., the average of 2 points for our six non-AAs at NCAA) is far less pronounced.
