Lots of reasons.....
First, when was the last time a non scholarship Ivy league school was relevant in FBS football? You think kids are going to a school. no matter how good, if they cannot get financial help? Do you think boosters that have been at the top of P5 are going to pony up for an FCS subdivision school at the same level? Now to the more direct issues. Huge stadiums, training facilities, etc., etc., are all necessary to compete at the top level and that takes money not only to construct but, to maintain and upgrade. Also, football and the revenue it produces subsidizes the entire athletic department. I think it is tilting at windmills to think a D-3 model will maintain the football programs at a level akin to the big business that is D-1 FBS football today.
