I get where you're coming from...

And it really depends on what you had behind that scoring that left. If you had a bunch of players who didn't see significant minutes due to upperclassmen/NBA draftees taking up minutes, then you have a good shot at replacing the scoring you lost.

Think of it like lots of potential, little opportunity. I think Wilkins is close to this category.

Unfortunately for VT, the best of what they had behind the scorers of last year are 2 players (Bede and Horne) who played significant minutes, but failed to provide scoring (both averaged 3ppg despite being on the floor a combined 38mpg).

For those guys, there was a lot of opportunity, but little production.

Behind them, you have Nolley and Radford. Two unknowns who will be seeing their first action at the collegiate level. They are a notch above freshmen, who haven't practiced for a full year like Nolley and Radford, but below Sophomores with experience figuring out how to score against ACC opponents.

Behind Nolley/Radford you have all the newcomers. Until they've proven they're capable of scoring, they're even more of an unknown than Nolley and Radford. There is an equal amount of chance that none of the newcomers pan out than there is that this group can be relied upon to replace the scoring that left.

Notable stats for VT freshmen

Nickeil Alexander-Walker - 10ppg
Justin Robinson - 7ppg
Chris Clarke - 8ppg
Kerry Blackshear - 6ppg
Justin Bibbs - 11ppg

Those are 5 very good players who all panned out for VT. Those stats, if the bulk of your team were these players, would be tough to win games. It would be a struggle to average 60 points as a team. And again, those were very very good players. Does VT have 5 newcomers in this class who are on that level?

VT lost a ton of scoring, and were not prepared with layered depth to replace it. This will make for some rough offensive outings, which still says nothing on the defensive end, where newcomers lag the most.
