Observations on Game 2
These are from a VERY untrained eye, so take them with a grain of salt.
Freshman Kaylee Hewitt started game 2 in the circle and had a perfect first inning - three straight strikeouts and simply looked dominating. She appeared almost intimidating on the mound - all 6'2" of her. She ran into trouble in the 2nd and 3rd innings so maybe she tired as this was her first real game action in quite a while. She looked like she had a LOT of promise.
Sophomore Mara Strum relieved her and pitched the final 4+ innings, giving up 2 runs in the 7th, but striking out 5 with only one walk.
The defensive lineup had Kelsey Brown in Left, Darby Trull in Center, and Kate Kobayashi in Right. I continue to remain impressed with Brown's speed - the girl can simply fly. Kobayashi got on base all 4 times in this game - 2 walks and 2 Hit By Pitch.
In the infield, Meredith Slaw played first, Ansley Whitley played Short, and Georgia Blair played Third the entire game. Olivia Lattin started the game at Second and Ashley Whitley took over in the 4th.
Until the 7th, the Hokies struggled at the plate with only 2 hits. However, there were several coaching opportunities during the game, such as a missed signal that may have run the Hokies out of a big inning. Those are the exact reason you play these games learn and get better.
In spite of the close call today, I've liked what I've seen in the 4 Fall Ball games and think we have a LOT of promise.
Next up are two more games next Friday - Bluefield College at 4:00 and King University at 6:00.
Let;s Go Hokies!
