Was the program tanking, an inevitability? Random thoughts

Recently (I think it was Will's work?) reading about the $$ in college football, and how we've really fallen behind some of the schools we are used to competing with. This isn't 1999 any more. Take a look at the size of some of the SEC staffs and their budgets. Look at Clemson's budget. Lot of people doing a lot of work.

What's happening now isn't how I thought our team would be broken, but broken we are. Would this have come about more slowly, if left to its own devices, though?

And now w/ the news out of California. What would a TT, MV2, or KJ cost us in that scenario? I'm beginning to wonder if the entire college football game is on the rocks and due for radical change. The ACCN launch was bungled by Swofford et al. I'm not sure we'll get the big $$ we were hoping to from that. Time will tell.

And the NCAA itself. Can an institution (college football) continue to serve all schools, or even continue to exist, when rules are applied unevenly? This is about UNC being able to do whatever; Alabama and SEC schools, doing whatever; and schools like ours being denied simple things like a transfer. The model seems fundamentally broken to me.

I do think that no matter how the immediate future shakes out, it begins with a dollar sign and a bunch of commas if we are to compete. Buy outs, larger staff, an expensive new coach (more expensive than Fu', and why not!? If you're the new guy, wouldn't you ask for more?), ever enlarging facilities, etc etc.

I'm not sure our alumni are willing to support all that. We haven't, on the heels of tremendous success; will we, in the face of all this uncertainty? And if not, were we not doomed to mediocrity eventually anyway?

Just some random thoughts and hoping for a thread that isn't bashing our kids or the coaches.
