In '83-'85 I remember the 'community' of PC stations in 101 Pamplin Hall

that students could use (I mean monitors&keyboards connected to the main frame in Burruss Hall). You would have to walk next door to Burruss to pick up your print-outs. I used them for writing and running my Fortran programs for a structural engineering class. I can remember being in there sometimes as late as 4 a.m. (and I was never alone, people always in there on those computers). One night during a thunder storm the power went out and I hadn't saved my work. The main frame in Burruss would intermittently 'back-up' work, but the storm got me before mine was saved. I remember that terrible helpless feeling of 'loss', wasted work and kicking myself. Never happened again. Sometimes you'd get so immersed in running and re-running your program you'd forget to save your work every few minutes. That was a great feeling when your program ran with no errors. When I first went to VT back in '73 there was a room in Pamplin (I believe on the 2nd floor) where they had a 'community' of calculators students could use.
