You are right stupidity or naivety is another factor


Some cases the student may truly be "stupid" and in other cases the student may be more "naive" for not having enough understanding on how the real world works. At least I think it may be reasonable to assume that some (maybe most) HS students live in their own bubble and may have little to no interest on things that take place outside his/her bubble. Then again, it may also depend on how much effort/encouragement parents give their children to want to learn about things going on in the world outside their bubble.
