Have a gas Weber we got in 2008 or so

Takes about 10 minutes to get it up to cooking temp in the summer time, longer in the winter. I would say costs are negligible because we use maybe 4 tanks a year at $29 each

I dawdle a little bit to squeeze 2 beers out of it, but if I focus I can go from put away to put away in 20 or 30 minutes for burgers and hot dogs, bit longer for steaks, pork tenderloin, chicken, etc.

You mention exploding gas, understandable, IMO the bigger concern is one you get with any grill and that is an "auxiliary" fire caused by drippings accumulating under the cook surface. Not always something you think about but I have had two nearly out of control grill fires caused by food remnants that I left in the drip pan.

Gas is pretty safe from an ignition stand point, turn on the gas and start your burners. As long as you don't do something careless like starting the gas with the lid down, I'd say gas is in a way safer than charcoal or wood because it's either on or off. You have quite a lot of smolder down time for other heat sources
