Love the carriage deal soap opera

I thought it was fun to see ESPN put out the threatening information around how their carriage deal with Direct ends tomorrow (Friday 9/13). They have been flooding the zone since Monday night trying to influence their viewers to call to complain.

Of course, if all of the Disney properties go dark tomorrow, your satellite dish will not help you see any of the Tech/Furman game on Saturday.

Welcome to the world of big media conglomerate urination contests!

So, Disney which is...Disney (ABC, ESPN (2,U,News,Classic,SECN,ACCN), Disney nets, etc) is in a carriage fight with DirectTV/AT&T/Warner Media (HBO,TBS,TNT, CNN, HLN, Cartoon Network, Bleacher Report, AT&T RSNs, etc.). The only thing that will actually be true in this standoff is that the consumer will lose because they will likely be deprived of programming until one of the parties yields that one can actually urinate a longer distance than the other.

I said before, you really do not want to get the mouse mad. Here's why. When I was in my previous gig with the cable company, I was able to take actual viewership information and create audience segments. I found that 26% of cable viewers essentially use their subscription to watch live sports. 25% of cable viewers watch nothing but children's programming.

So, if you are Disney, you have the best live sports programming and the best children's programming. If that represents over 50% of your audience, you would think that AT&T would not want to chase off their customers to cable or have them cut the satellite cord due to them not getting what makes them pay big fees to them on a monthly basis. This is why I think this urination battle will be resolved soon but may have some interesting fallout if all of Disney goes dark tomorrow.

With all of this, I have not forgotten that Disney is also negotiating with another major media conglomerate, Comcast (NBC, Universal, NBCSN, Bravo, USA, Weather Channel, Comcast RSNs, Telemundo, etc) to carry the ACC Network.

I know that negotiations must be getting close between Disney and Comcast when the ACC office started asking their (customers) to start calling Comcast again. That is always the sign that things are close and the hope is that the paying public will provide enough influence to get that final 2-3 cents per sub into the deal.

I am also waiting for the Notre Dame factor to kick in as ND is a partner with NBC to show football and ND is also a partner in the ACCN. I cannot believe for one minute that ND cannot try to influence their money tree to make a deal with Disney to give them even more cash.

Here is the interesting part of all of this. I truly believe that if Disney goes dark on DirectTV, you may see an ACCN deal with Comcast almost immediately. That way Comcast gets to advertise that they not only have the new ACC Network but also ALL of ESPN and Disney programming. That gives them a way to stick a middle finger toward AT&T while looking like a white knight to the poor cable subscriber.

Just my 2 cents. I'll just be happy if I can watch the game Saturday.
