Midwest culture
I understand the Midwest culture. I lived out there (central Ohio) for awhile. When I lived in Carroll County, Maryland, the culture had a Midwest feel, but drive 30-45 minutes east to Baltimore and you had a Northeast feel. Western Pennsylvania is sometimes considered Midwest and other times Northeast. Louisville is sometimes considered Midwest and other times Mid-South. Notre Dame is in the Midwest but they want to be associated with the eastern schools, especially northeastern schools.
Virginia Tech is the same distance from Baltimore than it is to Columbus, Ohio. Atlanta is about 30-45 minutes closer to Tech than Bloomington, Indiana. Atlanta and Tallahassee are just are far west as Ann Arbor and East Lansing. Notre Dame and Louisville are west of those 2 Michigan schools and not that far from Bloomington. IMHO, if Maryland and Rutgers started winning football games, things would gradually change. It takes time to be accepted. I wish Maryland would've stayed in the ACC. I think Maryland over reacted and that their new president with Big 10 roots willed UMCP into the Big 10. I was still living in Maryland when they decided to leave the ACC. That move wasn't that popular with their alumni and fan base. Seven years later, many have embraced the Big 10. UMCP dished out a lot of propaganda over the past seven years to have their alumni believe it was the best move for their great research university to be associated with other like-minded research universities. Now that UMCP is in the Big 10, some alumni that I speak with say that Maryland is a better academic fit in the research driven Big 10. They like being in a conference where 13 of their 14 members are AAU members. On a side note, when Tech played at Ohio State and they came to Blacksburg, that series felt natural and long overdue. I enjoyed that series as much as I enjoyed the Texas A&M series. I didn't feel the same way when Tech played Alabama or Tennessee, but those games were played on neutral sites.
