I'm old enough to remember when fans could call in to the postgame show.

That got eliminated when the questions got too uncomfortable for the powers that be. But at least "back in the day" fans had a chance to ask real questions during the weekly coach's show. The snowflake coaches of the modern era would be amazed to hear how their predecessors were often (rightly) put on the spot for inept playcalling or teams coming out flat in big games. "Jason in Arlington" used to be the rule, not the exception.

I haven't listened to a single VT call-in show since "Jason" because everything now is just the same warmed-over talking points that the coaches and athletic dept want to stick to. Press conferences are not a substitute, because media members know that if they get too aggressive, they will face retaliation in terms of getting access removed or cut off.

This phenomenon goes way beyond coaches shows... modern authority figures, be they coaches, politicians, corporate leaders, etc feel that they should never have to answer to the little guy. They will reluctantly attend stage-managed interactions with compliant media members, but that's it. There is little to no accountability or interaction with the average Joe.
