Watching the ODU game for the first time, trying to determine why there...

...was so much beeeotching and moaning after the win.

First half observations:

- 5 or 6 starters were out for this game.
- we're down to our 3rd string center, and he played fairly well.
- didn't see any blatantly missed tackles like we saw last year. Huge improvement
- RW threw the ball really well. He put a few balls into a space where there was no extra space. One really bad pass could have been a pick-6, but the defender dropped the ball.
- HG earned that "play of the day" with that TD catch.
- Definitely need to up our run game. King looked fairly good, but we need to recruit a "blue chip" RB this year. Heck, every year!
- O-line did a good job with pass protection. With this receiver corps, we need it! Clearly we are a passing team, not a running team. Hopefully we'll eventually have a balanced offense.
- Other than the first kickoff going OOB, did a good job getting touchbacks.

17-3 at the half.

Overall would give our first half a grade of B.

Second half observations:

- McClease is a good weapon as a receiver. He caught a few balls, picked up a few blitzes, and ran the ball well.
- RW ran the ball well. He was untouched on his TD run. O-line gets credit for the assist.
- A few dropped balls cost us some additional points.
- Hokiebird body surfs well
- a few missed tackles this half.
- a couple of PIs by Farley (one 1st half, now another in the 2nd). He needs to correct this ASAP, or everyone will go after him.
- 3rd highest % of freshmen, and fewest seniors in FBS this year, yet some think we're not young.
- PIs on Farley, but ODU appeared to get away with a few "no calls"
- mobile QBs are difficult to contain the entire game...lol
- Wheatly has wheels, but appeared to run out of steam at the end of his 70 yard return.
- Anyone know why we played 3 down linemen so much in the 2nd half? Looked more like a 3-4 defense for most of the second half. I hate this!
- can't put too much blame on RW for the fumble, after he was "targeted" by the ODU defender
- the ump did a good job in pass defense
- good to see HH get reps! Wish he would get a few throws!
- Reggie Floyd is the man! So clutch!
- We dropped a "sure interception" in the end zone.
- Neither Hokie quitter burned us Saturday.

I would give the second half a grade of C.

Overall for the game, would give our performance a B-/C+

Looking at the game, I see a huge improvement over last year's team. We're on the road back...
