The biggest problem is that the solution provided doesnt follow the premise

The title itself talks only about seat improvement. But the conclusion is "focus on academics"

So the outline (which I'm certain wasn't done) would have to have gone like this:

1) school is asking more money for my athletic seats (that I've bought for years)

2) we stink at athletics, with no hope in sight

3) VT shouldn't give as much money to athletics

So for #1, if you've purchased tickets for years, YOU are the one sending money to the athletic department, not the school. That, in and of itself, would destroy the rest of the argument, but we can continue

#2...a 3-decade-long bowl streak, and fresh off the school's first Sweet 16 appearance in 40 years, and the athletic department stinks? Or maybe the argument is based off of one football game and non-existent basketball games? If so, just keep this editorial in the draft phase until you have more data.

#3...VT as an academic institution doesnt prop up the athletic department. It is largely funded through donations and ticket sales.

Lastly, the mental gymnastics needed to avoid the irony of wanting to divert funds away from an athletic department you deem subpar is pretty impressive. Athletics need funds to be competitive, and the aspect VT is sorely lacking is funding. So your solution to this lack of success is to deprive the team you enjoy watching of more funding, just so you can get seats for cheaper? Why?

Let's talk about what the author wanted to accomplish here. And 1 of 2 outcomes need to happen to appease them:

1) they get cheap tickets and parking -- depriving the athletic department of funding

2) the athletic department suddenly becomes amazing at basketball and football

You cant have both of those things. If you want a better athletic program, you need to give it more money. If you want cheap, affordable tickets and parking, dont become a fan of a program that lacks funding.
