... a misalignment that needed to be corrected. A friend of mine had the same surgery a couple of years ago and she's doing fine now. Somehow her hip bone wasn't properly aligned in the socket and, over the years, her muscles had become over-developed in certain places to compensate for it, which only made the problem worse. I think it's called "dysplasia". Anyway, the surgeons will go in and cut away any excess bone that's developed and/or partially cut some of the tendons & muscles to relax them. If all goes well, the end result is that the hip bone fits properly into the socket once more and the patent is pain free.

I have no idea is this is what JK needed to have done, but dysplasia isn't all that uncommon, even among healthy young adults.
