Basketball coaches do not view the Virginia Tech job as highly as other programs in similar situations...right, wrong or indifferent it is absolutely a perception

Location is huge, and the amount of your total budget you need to spend on recruiting is more than other schools due to the lack of a close urban market as Chris stated below.

The rural environment of the school itself doesnt match up as well for a more urban-leaning game such as basketball. Taking a kid from inner city DC or Charlotte or Atlanta and dropping them in the hills of Southwest Virginia isnt always going to appeal to them.

It's a little easier for football due to the blue collar nature of the game itself, but you still see some of the same issues there as well.

Blacksburg certainly has its positives, and many of you chose the school for many of the reasons that other kids might turn it down. But there's a definite perception that VT is a tough place, and to an extent, it really is. It has to be a good fit.
