When Charlie Ergen came to our facility a few years back, he said that. He said he would rather have 8 million profitable customers than 11 million, with only 8 million profitable. It's about profit and free cash, not about market share. Satellite TV (and also cable) are declining markets, and the subscriber base is getting smaller. Most companies, ours included, are making serious investments in the next big thing, streaming, and some other things not even mentioned yet. The idea is to have a large amount of free cash, and if that means bleeding unprofitable customers, we will.

One part of my job is talking to customers that we have placed on what is known as "Last chance", where they are costing us money, and we have to read legal disclosures to them that limit what they can and cannot do, else we will no longer provide them service. You can imagine they do not take that all that well...lol. We're not under any type of legal obligation to provide our service to customers.
