I was a big Genesis fan in the 80's too
But I felt they peaked around Abacab / Three Sides Live. They took a dip with the album Genesis, rebounded nicely with Invisible Touch, then should have retired.
At the time, I loved the Invisible Touch album. Though I don't think it aged as well as Abacab.
But yeah, the musicality of Banks and Rutherford was pretty darned impressive in the 80's. I found their lyrical skills to be a little hit and miss, but the music itself was unique and amazing.
Re. his solo career, I always thought Hello I Must Be Going and Face Value were solid (and In the Air Tonight is probably one of the top-50 best songs in the history of Rock/Pop), but didn't do much for me after that.
