A few days after 9/11...

September 13th, 2001 was headed to Italy for vacation/walking trip leaving out of Dulles. Sept 11th happened, all flights were cancelled. So, a lot of thinking about stuff, of course, whether I should go or not and decided yes, still go, not going to let them stop me type of stuff, but still no flights so it was an academic exercise.

United had a feature where you could track flights and noticed one on Thursday, turned out to be the empty flight to practice new security features. Still packed so hurried down to the airport on Friday and yes, I caught the first flight headed to Europe so to speak.

I had used points, all the economy seats were taken so had to use 100k which put me in business class. And yes, I was the only one in business class, everyone else had cancelled. Had my own stewardess who had nothing else to do, kept trying to ply me with more wine. We talked about stuff. Didn't think about the economy section but imagine it was pretty bare also, Forget if that was still a 747, but it was a large plane, United's once a day flight to Rome.

Trying to catch up with my tour which was a few days in, catching busses and all thinking, well, at least I'm in Italy, that narrows it down. had one of those cheap Euro cell phones kept calling the tour leader who didn't seem too interested in my plight. (We all agreed he was kinda a dick for other reasons at the end of the trip) Remember trudging up a road to one of those walled hill towns showing up just after dinner. Surprised the shit out of a few people.

But yeah, there you go, my surreal flight as an only passenger on a very large plane.
