balance question than competitive balance. Hypothetical example but, what if athlete A is being recruited by two schools. Goes to school 1 and then sits out first year due to surgery to correct nagging injury. After surgery and recovery athlete hits the portal and goes to school 2. While I support freedom for kids to move you can see situations developing where some schools could become rehab or minor league development options for larger schools. Schools are already functioning to a certain degree as farm systems for pro franchises and without some well thought out rules either for movement and/or compensation there is a risk that some schools could be functioning as a farm system for other schools. The landscape gets a little more blurred as the business of college sports comes a little more in focus.
