Since you're going to ride it in France, buy a bike over there.

Trek is a great brand but nothing screams american tourist like a Trek in Europe. Scott although an American company is big in France. LaPierre and Cube have great bikes. Since you are in the mountains, get a carbon bike with a compact crank and at least an 11-30 cassette, Shimano 105 or better groupset and you'll be fine.
