1 year "tryout" and transfer rules....
The biggest problem is the transfer rules. If you are on any type of scholarship, you either have to go JUCO or sit out a year (year in residence) before going to another D1. NCAA just changed rule for non-scholarship players, but transfer is still a hassle. On top of that, there is no guarantee that you'll land anywhere. Hard roster limit limits opportunities. I think it's appalling that CJS has managed to force so many scholarship players out. That leaves them in a big bind. Coaches are committing to kids as much as kid is committing to school. BTW - check out the transfer portal - loaded with football players with no takers. Seems like a bit of coach collusion.
