Question about yesterday's world cup game.

I don't know much about soccer. But since it was the USA I watched yesterday's game. The goal Spain scored looked to me like a result of a lazy, half assed pass by the goalie. Why not just clear it out instead of passing right in front of your own goal. Like I say, I don't know much about soccer.
