I don't think it is a snake practice but..

I would be warry about doing it. The company may match/better the offer in the short term until they get to a point when they are comfortable replacing you, and then look out.

I guess I would ask why you are looking outside, if it is because you really want to move on, then there is no reason to try to leverage a better offer at the place you are. If you are testing the waters more out of curiosity and you get a much better offer, then I guess you got some thinking to do.
