Yeah, they were going to drop some, but overall they changed too much.
They couldn't rely on the Wishbone forever. And they were like VT in that they were way ahead of everybody else in strength and conditioning, and it was only a matter of time before everybody else put in the effort to catch up there. So they were going to drop off to a certain extent due to circumstances entirely out of their control. But they doubled down on it by trying to completely change their own culture by hiring Callahan.
The best coach they've had since then was Pelini, and they fired him. He won 9+ games every single year, and won 10 games in three of seven seasons. And they fired him. Granted, he might have a screw or two loose, but he brought the blue collar toughness culture that that program needs to succeed.
