Very cool. The Danes are surprisingly into American football

I currently live in Denmark. They have a semi-pro football league called the DAFF (Danish American Football Federation). Each team has a few American players, normally at QB, DB, or RB. The team closest to me is called the Gold Diggers (guessing something was lost in translation there!). They have a safety who used to play for Wake Forest, and their QB played for a D2 school out in Utah (Adams State or something like that).

Their season runs from April to June, a month long break in July, then again in August-September. The Danish version of the Super Bowl is called the Mermaid Bowl, and is played at a different host site around Denmark every October. I attended two years ago as the Copenhagen Towers (with a RB from some small school in Arkansas) beat the Gold Diggers in a driving rainstorm. Pretty fun though, and a great crowd (about 10,000) on hand.

For years, the all time leading scorer in the NFL was a Dane (Morten Andersen) until Vinatieri broke his record. Morten hosts a Super Bowl party in Copenhagen every year. And this year, the Danes had an OL named Hjalte Froholdt drafted by the Patriots. It was pretty big news here. Soccer is still their main sport here, but the Danes always surprise me with their knowledge and interest in American football. I think it has something to do with their Viking heritage and a kind of innate respect they have for "warriors" willing to lay it on the line and clash in a very physical game like football.
