There and did that to stop for gas. It was dangerous.
Actually, at times when I wasn’t in an aircraft flying down to Eglin/Hurlburt/Camp Rudder, we would have to stop overnight in Memphis. We had a Team’s worth of tactical gear and 2 armory rifle racks with M4s and 240s. We would unload under the cover of darkness so no one would see us and move everything into a motel room which we guarded overnight. Then we’d move on to FL the next morning.
To this day, I knew it was not the smartest thing to do, but I wasn’t TL so it was what it was.
