I'm a numbers person, but haven't researched thoroughly.
Anecdotal, My household income is about 4 times my parents HHI at the apex of their career, when they were putting me through college and I think our job seniority/level are about the same (in different industries). I'm much worse off though. My health insurance contribution is huge, and that gets deducted from my paycheck. He also had a pension and I have an IRA, which gets matched 100% up to 3%. So he was ahead of me both those places.
So I make four times as much, have less take home pay percentage-wise, and my kids education cost 12 times what he paid for my education.
Oh..and we have two earners in my household. My mom was a stay at home mom.
