Open steps (no risers) and no railing to prevent falling off the side.

My college roomie built a house all mahogany. Even the posts and beams were 12"x12" mahogany. Foyer was birds-eye maple. His stairs were like that, and he had to nail temporary fill-ins between the steps......until his occupancy permit was issued.
