Well they believe they learned from the "mistakes" made

by the original NASL (1968-1984). Specifically the creation of "super teams" (i.e. New York Cosmos signing Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and Carlos Alberto) which not only impacted the competition on the pitch, but also in the stands. For example the New York Cosmos average attendance was at least 28,000 people while Pele was on the team. While the rest of the league averaged less than approximately 10,000 people per game. The Cosmos was probably the only club to have 40,000 people show up for a home game and 73,000 people showed up when the Cosmos played in Soccer Bowl '78 at Giants Stadium.

Soccer Bowl was the NASL's championship game. FWIW the Cosmos won 5 championships and 1 2nd place finish. While the Chicago Sting were the next closest club with 2 championships and 0 2nd place finishes. Also, it is worth noting that no other team came close to matching the Cosmos appearances in the Soccer Bowl. The Cosmos had 6 appearances and the next closest clubs (3 of them) only had 3 appearances.
