Who says there has to be equity though?
My point is that prior to the creation of the BCA, the AP Poll and Coaches Poll were the 2 main polls and each one got to crown their national champion. So the day before the start of the regular season, all 100+ teams had a shot to be crown national champion in either or both polls.
Once the BCA was formed, it essentially laid the foundation to segregate the DI-A/DI-FBS conferences into either a power conference or non-power conference/mid-major. The BCS completed the segregation when the Rose Bowl, the Big Ten, and the Pac-12 were included in the mix. It also meant that if any team is not a member of a power conference or named Notre Dame, then it is excluded from competing for the DI-FBS National Championship(s).
Essentially the BCA, BCS, and the Playoffs are the same entity or evolution of the same entity. With each evolution the segregation between the power conference and mid-majors widens. A byproduct is a similar segregation is going on within the power conferences. If the separation continues to widen, then a day could come where the lesser group within the power conference and the mid-majors could be jettisoned from the club.
