Thoughts from Lexington after a long ride home

Well, the outcome wasn’t what we wanted this weekend, but there is no denying that was still a GREAT season. Picked to finish 10th in the preseason and the Hokies won the regular season ACC title. They won 23 games last year and 47 this year. That's an AMAZING turnaround.

I’ve said it before and I will say it over and over – these Hokies are some of the finest young ladies I have ever met. First class all the way. The facilities at Kentucky are set up so that the players walk through the concourse to get to the dressing room so there was more interaction than normal, and I can’t tell you the number of “thank you for coming” type comments I heard from these ladies throughout the tournament.

That closeness to the crowd also broke your heart after the Sunday game. There were a lot of daughter/daddy/momma moments that I witnessed from afar that caused your allergies to act up. These girls are really close and wanted so much to win.

We were fortunate to have an exceptional group of seniors like Emma, Caitlyn, Kinsey, and Sierra that set the tone for the rest of the team and they were true leaders.

The parents of the players were kind enough to invited me to tailgate with them before the games and it is very obvious where that class comes from. These folks are truly a wonderful group of people who really appreciate the love of Hokie Nation. These are very, very special people and we are fortunate to have them in the Hokie Family.

I will also say that the facilities at Kentucky are first class. They had 1,800 in attendance on day one and just shy of 2,000 on Sunday and they were loud and for the most part, very friendly. I certainly think they probably helped the Cats, even if they didn’t need it.

It looked liked the games were dissected thoroughly on here, so I won’t rehash it, but I do think the Hokies are not that far away from going further in the tournament. The future is indeed bright.

Pete said it best in the postgame remarks: "I got hired a little over a year ago and inherited a team that had won 23 games, and here we are sitting here and we've won 47. So, after the initial shock of the loss wore off, I'm looking back and there are a lot of things to build on for next year. I'm really proud of the kids and we'll get it next year."

GO HOKIES!!!!
