I was very concerned for several reasons

A guy over 50 who has a total lack of experience at high level basketball (even Ryan Odom spent a lot of years as an assistant in major conferences). I was concerned about whether he could recruit at this level, and obviously Nolley and Cone make me feel a lot better about that. I was concerned how much we paid him (what did we multiply his salary by, 10x). I was concerned about his ability to coach at the high level... everyone who harped on "he beat North Carolina" were ignoring the fact that he was something like 12-57 vs power conf teams. I heard people who loved the deal saying he was such a good coach he could take players who weren't ACC caliber and win with them in the ACC and I was, and AM very skeptical about that.

And yes, I wondered about a guy who stayed in one small-time, comfortable spot for 30 years. I am about the same age as he is and I am far less ambitious about making a huge career jump like I would have been when I was younger. I value stability and comfort a heck of a lot more than when I was 20. Now if someone offered to ten-tuple my salary and set me up for a wealthy retirement I'd jump at it, I'd try to do my best, but I don't know that I'd be up to a really challenging job change at this point. (And I wouldn't really care if I failed because I'd be set up for the rest of my life).

So I had a lot of concerns, I either wanted a proven veteran who had won at a high level or an up and coming young coach who had a wide variety of experience (assistant at a high level, head job at a lower level and maybe then a jump up to a medium level).

And I still have some of those concerns but the incredible effort he has put out on the recruiting trail, both in terms of all the players he has gone after and all the travelling he has done, and the results so far, makes me feel a lot better.
