Tarping upper decks
That is what the XFL is going to do in St. Louis, NY, SEA and TB.
The XFL's preference was to be in Orlando instead of Tampa Bay, but when the AAF put a team there, the XFL went to Tampa Bay.
In St. Louis, they will pay a flat fee of $300,000 plus $100,000 per game for rent, but they get to keep all the ticket proceeds, so it doesn't look like they will be paying any of the taxes and fees that localities charge on ticket sales. The stadium operators get the concessions and parking. Plus, if St Louis gets an MLS team, the XFL team will share the stadium with them.
As for Met Stadium, the WWE already runs some of their biggest events there, and I would venture to bet that McMahon has worked a deal so that the WWE will continue those events in exchange for a favorable rent deal at a time when the stadium isn't being used. Plus tarping off sections can help the stadium look fuller. Martinsville Raceway tarped off the entire backstretch several years ago because the tarp sponsors paid more than what those seats brought in revenue.
